Home to the world's most endangered group of mammals, on an island that has already lost 90% of its original forest — but where targeted law enforcement is now visibly slowing loss inside protected areas.
Madagascar separated from mainland Africa roughly 150 million years ago, giving its plants and animals tens of millions of years to evolve in isolation. The result is a level of endemism found almost nowhere else on Earth: over 80% of its biodiversity, and up to 90% of its species overall, exist nowhere else — concentrated almost entirely within the island's shrinking forest cover.
Only about 10% of Madagascar's original primary forest cover remains today. Lemurs — found in the wild almost exclusively on Madagascar — are now considered the world's most endangered group of mammals: as of 2025, 98% of roughly 100+ recognized lemur species face extinction risk, with more than 30% classified Critically Endangered.

A hectare of forest lost in Madagascar carries a different weight than a comparable hectare almost anywhere else, simply because of what depends on it existing at all.
Deforestation figures for Madagascar vary noticeably by measurement method, and it's worth being explicit about why. Global satellite tree-cover-loss datasets using a standard 30% canopy-density threshold estimated Madagascar's 2024 national deforestation at roughly double the figure produced by a tailored method developed specifically for Madagascar's forest types by WRI and national researchers (117,600 hectares). Neither figure is wrong — they simply define "forest" differently — but it means single headline numbers for Madagascar should be read alongside their methodology rather than compared directly across sources.
There are genuine, measurable signs of progress specifically inside formally protected areas, even as national-level forest loss continues to accelerate outside them. Of Madagascar's 109 terrestrial protected areas, 57 showed significantly reduced deforestation in 2024, credited largely to stepped-up law enforcement and the deployment of the Forest Watcher monitoring app — in one park, Kirindy Mité National Park, recorded fire points fell from 33 in 2020 to just 3 by 2022. These efforts have also engaged local women in forest patrols, a notable shift in a traditionally male-dominated role. The gap remains funding: entrance fees to Madagascar's national park network covered only about 1% of required management costs as of 2021, leaving many protected areas formally designated but only partially enforced — sometimes described as "paper parks."
This report carries a "Strong" Evidence Level rating, reflecting well-documented IUCN lemur assessments and multiple independent satellite and enforcement datasets. The main source of genuine uncertainty is methodological rather than factual: as noted above, different deforestation-tracking approaches (global threshold-based vs. Madagascar-specific tailored methods) currently produce meaningfully different national loss estimates for the same year, and reconciling them is an active area of forest-monitoring research rather than a settled question. Protected-area enforcement data is also necessarily uneven — the sites showing measurable improvement are, by definition, the ones with active monitoring, and comparably rigorous data may not yet exist for every one of Madagascar's 109 protected areas.
